HAMPSHIRE-based manufacturer of marine safety equipment McMurdo has won a prestigious award from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa). The company has been awarded a Rospa Occupational Health and Safety Award 2002.

The awards are designed to ensure that organisations have good health and safety management systems in place. McMurdo recently moved to new premises at Silver Point, Hilsea, where the workforce is employed in the design, manufacture, sales and support of hi-tech electronics and satellite marine safety products.

McMurdo's health and safety manager Ray Ezzard explained: "Our factory covers light assembly work, and it is imperative that for the welfare of our staff we are safety conscious and keep any potential risks to a minimum."

McMurdo introduced training to cover the key areas of ergonomics, manual handling and display screens.

"By combining in-house training and using external consultants, we have actively involved our workforce with occupational safety measures, and this has resulted in achieving the nationally recognised Rospa award," said Mr Ezzard.

The Rospa award was presented to McMurdo at a special ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel during Safety and Health Expo 2002.
