ARCHERS at Sway spent Sunday morning doing what England's footballers would love to have done - they spent 90 minutes hitting the target.

Sway Bowmen decided to stage their Winchcombe Trophy contest as their Golden Jubilee event for the village, with each archer shooting five dozen arrows from 20 yards.

Richard Holland and Steve Cowley won the pairs with 1,081 points, followed by Olwen Lee and Mark Cooper with 1,069 and Teresa Cowley and Nick Burnay with 1,067.

Olwen was top lady with 548, Trevor Smith top man with 578 and Michael Parsons top junior with 435.

This was just one event in a total of ten days of Jubilee jollification in Sway, with dances, balls, and fancy dress processions following celebratory sports days, village quizzes and beetle drives.

Ray Bradfield, chairman of the village carnival committee, said the huge effort made by the village had made him proud to live in Sway.

"Everyone has got involved in the fun. It's been great. And I want to congratulate the children especially for dropping so little litter and keeping Sway neat and tidy.

"By the time all the events are over most of the local population should have won a rosette for something. Everyone from tots to grannies took part in the traditional village races today - three-legged race, egg-and-spoon, slow bike race. The only one we missed was the sack race and that's because we forgot to bring the sacks!"

The carnival committee hopes to have raised about £1,000 to support Sway's Jubilee Field and youth group.
