A team of six divers from Southampton Diving Academy brought back a total of 12 medals from the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) Junior and Senior National Championships in Sheffield over the Jubilee weekend.

The group bagged three gold, six silver and three bronze medals between them at the top British competition of the year and Pete Waterfield qualified to compete in the World Cup on all three boards.

Waterfield took golds in the highboard individual and synchro events - diving with partner Leon Taylor from Sheffield in the synchro. On the 1m and 3m springboards he took silver medals, scoring a personal best of 623 points in the 3m event.

"It was a little disappointing that he was pipped to the post on the 1m," said coach, Lindsey Fraser, "He was defending the title from last year. However, he is diving very well this year and we have high hopes for both the Commonwealth Games and World Cup."

In the junior team Gary Hunt, 17, took the third gold medal for the club, also on highboard. In addition, his excellent performance meant that he gained a bronze medal in the senior event.

For his coach, Mark Alderman, it was a particularly significant result: "Twenty one years ago, at the age of 16, I won the same event," he explained. "It is incredibly satisfying to have been able to be a part of Gary achieving the same success now."

As well as his individual success Gary also gained a bronze and a silver medal diving with teammate Robert Appleby, 16, in the 3m junior and with Oliver Murley from Bradford in the highboard synchro events respectively.

The female members of the team also performed well. In gaining fourth place in the individual junior highboard event, Charly Tomkys, 17, beat two international divers and showed that despite her relatively recent involvement in the sport (she took up diving only just over two years ago) she is a real force to be reckoned with.

Just before Easter she suffered a broken ankle during a netball match, which has inevitably affected her training schedule during the months leading up to this major Championship.

In partnership with teammates Natalie Hill, 14, on 3m and Maxine Harle, 15, on highboard she gained silver medals in both junior events and a silver medal on highboard for the senior event. Maxine also gained a bronze medal with partner Laura Jones from Beaumont Diving Academy on the 3m board.

Charly had predictably mixed feelings about her success. "I am really relieved to have been able to dive at all," she explained. "When I broke my ankle in March I knew I might not be able to come here at all, so to come away with medals is really great." The junior team members have now moved to Leeds to join younger colleagues for the National Age Groups Championships to be held June 5-8.
