FIREFIGHTERS are warning youngsters to stay out of abandoned buildings following a suspected arson fire at a derelict pub in Southampton yesterday evening.

Emergency services were called to the blaze, which broke out at around 5.50pm in the abandoned Seaweed Pub in Weston Lane, Weston,

Fire chiefs say the pub has been targeted "numerous times" by vandals since it closed in August two years ago.

Police are also investigating the blaze which is thought to have been started by youngsters.

Around 20 firefighters from Hightown and St Mary's tackled the blaze which badly damaged the roof of the abandoned building.

Six members of the emergency service wearing breathing apparatus also checked inside the pub to make sure nobody was trapped inside the fire-damaged building.

Leading Firefighter Nigel Mottashead from Hightown said when the brigade had arrived at the fire there were "numerous" blazes outside the building and more inside.

He said: "We had a slight problem gaining access due to the boarding and general security measures.

"We have been here on numerous occasions. We suspect arson and would urge youngsters to stay away from abandoned buildings that are prone to fire."

Locals say the derelict pub site pub had become like a "little Lebanon" since it was shut-down by brewers.

One local who did not wish to be named said: "We have had youths breaking windows and setting fire to the place."

It is understood the pub is scheduled for demolition shortly. The site is thought to be earmarked for redevelopment.
