A DISGRACED Basingstoke football team has vowed to quit the league after being thrown out of a cup competition.

Winklebury-based Three Barrels were told on Saturday that they were being dismissed from the Hampshire Junior A Cup following an incident during their third-round tie.

The decision came as a blow to Three Barrels who had originally been told to replay the match against Southampton side Stoneham TJs.

The original game was abandoned last month when a supporter from Stoneham ran onto the pitch and tangled with a Three Barrels player who retaliated and was sent off.

The Hampshire FA disciplinary commission ordered a replay but, in an unusual move, the cup committee later stepped in and ruled both sides should be thrown out.

This is not the first time Three Barrels have been disqualified from a competition.

Three Barrels player Wayne Barber said: "It is very disappointing that they have made this decision. There are no hard feelings between the sides but I think our name has gone before us.

"That is the reason why we are disbanding at the end of the season. We have had enough."

Hampshire FA cup co-ordinator Simon Huntley said it was possible that the disciplinary committee made its original recommendation believing the game was a league match and not a cup tie.

He added: "But, as both parties were guilty, we decided both would be thrown out."

There is no appeal against the decision.

Three Barrels were involved in another abandonment last Saturday when referee Chris Coleman called their home Basingstoke premier division game against Bramley United to a halt five minutes early.

This was due to continued bickering between the two teams.

Although Bramley were leading 1-0 at the time, the league will await the findings of the Hants FA before deciding on the result of the match.
