HAVANT & Waterlooville remain unbeaten and top of the Dr Martens League Premier Division after a superb 1-0 victory over Weymouth at the Wessex Stadium.

Tim Hambley's overhead kick, 14 minutes from time, settled the issue and maintained the Hawks' two-point lead over Tamworth, who trimmed Newport County - Andover's FA Cup opponents next week - 2-0.

"It was a backs to the ball job for some of the time, but we were well worth our win," reflected joint-manager Mick Jenkins, who has Ben Price on a lengthening injury list for tomorrow evening's home game with Welling United.

"We made sure we kept it tight for the first half and took some of the sting out of their crowd.

"To be honest, we opened them up a few times in the second half and might have got more than Tim's goal out of it."

But Jenkins is worried that Havant's hectic two games a week schedule is taking is toll.

"We had Aaron Cook, Dave Leeworthy and Paul Wood all missing at Weymouth and now it looks as though Pricey's going to be out as well," he sighed.

But there was no joy for winless Salisbury, who remain anchored to the Premier Division basement after a 1-0 defeat at Welling.

Player-manager Taffy Richardson was far from happy at Salisbury's display.

"I've got limited resources available, but I give 100 per cent effort whenever I play. I didn't get that from most of my players at Welling," he grumbled.

A fifth minute mix up between on-loan goalkeeper Simon Rayner and Salisbury defender Roger Emms sent the Whites slithering to their eighth defeat of the season.

The ball fell to Steve Barnes, whose chip shot was parried by Rayner ... only for Gary Abbott to prod home Welling's winner.

Wayne Turk had Salisbury's only second half chance, while Rayner attoned for his slip with several fine saves.

Newly-promoted Newport have slipped into the relegation zone after suffering a 3-1 defeat at Merthyr Tydfil, who have climbed above them near the bottom of the table.

"But we missed enough chances to have won the game by a mile," fumed Newport player-coach Guy Whittingham.

"We missed a dozen chances and should have been four-nil up before they even scored.

"We had six or seven one on one chances - and put only one of them away."

A second-half consolation goal from Danny Gibbons was all Newport had to show - but by then they were chasing the game after Danny Haynes had scored twice before the break.

An injury-time third by Merthyr substitute Mark Dodds finished Newport off.

In the Eastern Division, Bashley were left to count the cost of a missed Darren Robson penalty as they sank to a 1-0 defeat at Burnham.

The Foresters' big chance to win the game came in the 62nd minute when the normally reliable Robson shot over the bar from the spot after Fraser Quirke had been brought down by goalkeeper Dave Smalley.

Burnham's Steve Lockhart rattled the Bashley woodwork before grabbing their winner seven minutes from time when Micky Durkin got behind the visitors defence to sweep the winner past a despairing Darren Crowfoot.
