The Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium will be put proudly on display tomorrow to more than 100 million people.

The friendly between Japan and Nigeria is being screened live in both countries and Saints are determined to put on a good show.

It is the first time the club has hosted an international and they are delighted to have been selected.

The game has been organised by KAM sports international who were asked by Japan to set up two tough friendlies in Europe as part of the build-up to next year's World cup finals.

Japan played Senegal in Lens on Thursday night and now face an even more demanding test against Nigeria who have qualified for their third successive finals.

KAM spokesman Michael Darcy said: "A delegation from the JFA came over specially to look at potential venues.

"They wanted to be within 90 minutes of London but were not keen on playing in the capital.

"They looked at Reading but they were very impressed by Southampton and chose that instead.

"The fact it is a new ground appealed to them and they loved the facilities here. They also wanted one which will look good on television.

"It would be nice if we could get a decent crowd in and I am sure they would be very appreciative of the action.

"I know Saints fans have a reputation for enjoying good quality football and this is a rare chance for them to see two top international sides.

"Prices have been pitched about right so that plenty of youngsters can come to see players who will become familiar faces on their television screens next summer.

"It may only be a friendly but there is a lot at stake for both sets of players who will want to impress.

"Both sides are technically accomplished with plenty of flair and it should be a highly entertaining afternoon.

"It is definitely something a bit different for the area. The English FA would not normally approve a neutral game but they have given the go-ahead for this one because it is such a prestigious fixture.

"Their chairman Geoff Thompson will even be travelling down from Old Trafford to be at the match."
