VILLAGERS have given a cautious welcome to plans to develop the site of a former chemical works in Hampshire.

Totton-based Linden Homes aim to build about 200 homes at the former Borden Chemical site in Rownhams Road, North Baddesley, but Test Valley Borough Council says the company's application must also contain space for industrial units.

The local parish council voted unanimously for the land to be developed for much-needed residential development, suggesting the scheme could incorporate a nursing home and creche facilities.

On Saturday the village hall was packed with concerned local residents who responded to an invitation to an open planning day.

They received a presentation by Linden Homes' architects and were able to study at first hand the outline plans for the development, which covers about 18 acres.

Residents were also able to voice their fears about the scale of the industrial development, employment issues, trees, pollution, car parking and traffic flow.

Stephen Davies, land director for Linden Homes, said he was delighted by the level of the turn out and how many people stayed after the presentation for the workshop. Visitors said they were delighted at being given an opportunity to study the view the plans and most people gave it a cautious welcome.

Local councillor Eric Cosier said now that Borden had gone, it was a perfect opportunity for the site to be exclusivbely used for housing.

He said: "It is sorely needed here. We have enough satellite trading centres in the area.'

The land has lain dormant since 1998 when Borden Chemicals closed its resin production plant in the wake of a £45m takeover in Barry, South Wales. The company moved its entire operations there, with the loss of 55 jobs in Hampshire.
