Tottonians proceeded to put Trojans to the sword as they turned in what can only be described as a scintillating performance of running and passing rugby to crush them 64-5 in this much anticipated London Four South-West clash.

Not a single person on the ground could have envisaged what they witnessed and very few of the players on the park could either, to see the hosts run home ten tries to one.

But, for the early passages of play, it was Trojans who were the more dominant in ball possession, but were guilty of not using what they had, whereas Tottonians were clinical and used what ball they gained by posting scores.

The impressive Guy Tonkins, Tottonians' full-back set the ball rolling as he cut through a gap in Trojans' defence by collecting the first score before winger Steve Broomfield started his try tally with three in 16 minutes before the break.

Trojans had no answer as they lost their shape, formation and their will. It was like a red rag to a bull for Tottonians who, sensing the kill, ran at the ragged defence to grind the visitors into submission, with four tries in the final ten minutes.

Broomfield took his total to five, while Tonkins added a second, which could have been more had he not been unselfish in providing the winger with the try scoring pass, a point not missed by the youngster.

"Guy should take a lot of credit for my five tries", said Broomfield. "Three of my scores were run ins coming from passes from him."

"But I have never scored five tries before, sometimes it just happens like that. Dave Lamb on the other wing didn't get on the scoresheet, so I was lucky this time."

For Totts skipper Miles Northover, their showing was the culmination of the hard work they had put in over the summer. "Some of the moves that didn't quite come off last week came off perfectly.

"We knew we had to come out hard as they fancied their chances of winning, and that is what we did. I didn't expect to win by that many."

"This will give us a lot of heart and prove how well we can play."

And nor did Trojans' head coach Richard Cheal. "All credit to Tottonians, who played very well. I have never seen a Tottonians side play like that, and nor had Bob Millard, their coach.

"I am desperately disappointed in the way we played, we way we lost our style and defensive structure.

"All the lads are hurting, as am I. I have never been involved in a match where my side have been so heavily beaten.

"But they won't be hurting today as much as they will be on Tuesday night at training!" he added.
