A DRINK-driver has admitted causing a late- night road accident in Southampton in which a pedestrian died.

John MacTaggart, 34, of Radstock Road, Woolston, Southampton, admitted being responsible for the accident.

Yesterday he pleaded guilty at the city crown court to causing the death of 41-year-old Alan Griffiths by driving a BMW without due care and attention when over the drink-drive limit.

MacTaggart - who had been arrested at the accident scene and later bailed - was remanded in custody yesterday for sentence.

The tragedy happened at the junction of Radstock Road and Manor Road North in Woolston on March 10 this year.

A witness told the Daily Echo at the time how he had been watching television when he heard a screech like a car attempting to stop.

The man - who declined to be named - said: "It seemed like it went on forever.

"I heard car doors slamming and people shouting and talking.

"I looked out of the window and saw a couple of cars with their hazard lights on and a group of people. There was a man in the road."

The retail manager and his wife, who are both qualified first aiders, rushed out to help. "I heard someone say: 'He's not breathing, there's no pulse'.

"There was a chap on a mobile phone to the ambulance and they told him to tell me to commence CPR and recuscitation.

The police were here in a matter of minutes.''

Despite attempts by the emergency services, Mr Griffiths, of Norton Close, Woolston, was pronounced dead at the scene.
