Hampshire's Young Cricketers will play Glamorgan in the ECB Under-17 County Championship quarter-finals at the Rose Bowl next Thursday.

They made sure of a last-eight slot with a convincing first innings win over Cornwall - the 60-run victory clinching the south-west group for Colin Beer's side.

Hampshire, who had previously beaten Devon and Dorset but lost to Somerset, virtually had the game sewn up at the end of the first day.

Portsmouth's Naqeeb Ali Mohammed (5-45) stole the limelight as Hampshire bowled Cornwall out for 158 in just 53 overs.

Chris Wright (2-29), Paul Cass (2-22) and Ed Brogan (1-24) took the other five wickets.

Hampshire, in near total control at 132-3 at the close of the first day's play, went on to reach 218 all out, with Chris Lyon (47), Kevin Latouf (30), Wright (30) and Cass (24) top scoring.

It is the first time since 1997 that Hampshire have reached the under-17 quarter-final stage.

Four years ago, and with the likes of Iain Brunnschweiler, Lawrie Prittipaul and Lymington's Ben Craft in their side, Hampshire got through to the final itself, only to lose to Northants.

There is no quarter-final joy for Hampshire at under-19 level, the county colts exiting from the ECB Championships after consecutive defeats by Middlesex and Essex.

For the second successive year, Nick Compton - grandson of the legendary Dennis Compton - spiked Hampshire's guns.

Compton junior hit 102 as Middlesex effectively batted Hampshire out of the contest on the first day at Merchant Taylor's School, scoring 381-9.

Hampshire lurched to 22-3 before Neil Randall (68) and Martin Bushell (56) came together.

Despite Steven Snell's unbeaten 72, Hampshire were dismissed for 261 and, following on, had reached 116-4 (Snell 38, Randall 33) by stumps.

Any faint prospects Hampshire had of quarter-final qualification disappeared when they were bowled out for a rain-disrupted 181 by Essex at the Rose Bowl.

Will Faulkner (52), Tom Burrows (44) and Snell (36) made their mark before Essex cantered to a first winnings victory, finishing at 200-7.

Peter Hammond (68) and Alex Richardson (58) shared a century opening partnership as Hampshire YCs piled up 279-3 against Seven Counties Under-16 Championship leaders Essex at the Nursery ground.

BAT's Graham Noble cracked 17 fours in an unbeaten 101 before Essex replied with 211-2 on a rain-spoiled second day.
