IT WAS definitely art when Fleeing New York bassist Emma Richardson put her paintings on display at New College in Southampton.

The 18-year-old Winchester College art student knew exactly who to use for inspiration for the collection - her fellow musicians in the local four-piece band.

"My art is inspired by what happens in my life and specifically the band members, who are a huge part of my social life. We spend unhealthy amounts of time together," says Emma.

In her main study, Emma depicts herself and keyboardist Katie Taylor.

"I used a photo taken by Katie from one drunken evening and my idea sprung from it really. It showed us in a totally unselfconscious state. The interesting thing was that one of us was putting on a face and looked a bit secretive. I won't say who!"

Lead singer Russell Marsden and drummer Matt Hayward also feature in the collection of paintings and prints, which got a positive reaction from exhibition goers.

"It's like having a really nice memory captured in a photo - but much better," says Russell.

"It's got all the atmosphere of the band, and we're even thinking about making up a montage of Emma's work and projecting it onto the back of the stage at our gigs."

The group, who recently won Talking Heads' Battle of the Bands contest, has found that fans have already cottoned on to the possibility of snapping up a future collectors' item.

"We have had some interest," says Emma.

"People seem to think that when we make it big, these pictures will be worth something. I'm not sure if I'm ready to sell yet - but I might be for the right price."
