TENS of thousands of pounds being spent on installing a mini roundabout to reduce the speed of traffic on a notoriously busy Hampshire road is not enough, say campaigners.

The £70,000 scheme for Warsash Road in Locks Heath has not eased concerns about the safety of children at a nearby school.

Amanda Strand, whose two children are pupils at Locks Heath Infant and Junior School, said the plans were welcome but needed to go further.

She said: "Of course it's great that things are being done but what we really want is another crossing for people using the road coming from Titchfield. The traffic on that road is crazy so it's just whether a mini roundabout will actually make any difference."

A 300-signature petition was handed into Fareham Borough Council at the beginning of the year from anxious parents following two accidents within the space of four months involving children along the road.

Mrs Strand, of Daisy Lane, Locks Heath, said: "There is still no way that I would let either of my children cross that road without supervision, which is stupid considering one of them is nine years old. But that road is dangerous and it needs more than a mini roundabout to flow the traffic that comes racing along there."

But county engineers, who are responsible for the road, defended their decision by saying it was one of a series of measures being undertaken to slow down traffic.

Hampshire County Council engineer Paul Turner said: "We think it is the most sensible way to encourage traffic to be more aware and reduce their speed when coming up to the junction with Locks Road. There is already a pelican crossing outside the school and there are more plans to instal perhaps more mini roundabouts on other junctions along the road, so we are working really hard to solve the speeding traffic problem."

Fareham borough councillor Ruth Godrich, who handed in the original petition to councillors on behalf of the campaigners, also welcomed the plan.

She said: "This is really welcome news and part of a continued effort to insure better road safety along the road."

Work on the mini roundabout at Locks Road and Warsash Road will take two months, during which time temporary traffic lights will be in place along the road.

Councillor Godrich added: "This work is absolutely essential, so the sooner it can begin the better."
