THE annual HMS Collingwood Open Day in Fareham went off with a bang as usual this year with the Brickwood Field Gun competition the main feature event.

The popular race was won in a show of strength by the hosts, HMS Collingwood A crew, who proved too quick over the course for HMS Heron, from Yeovilton, Somerset.

Portsmouth was in the hunt with the HMS Excellent crew but eventually finished in third place.

The open day was also the venue for the national tug of war championships, where the teams from Bosley, Macclesfield, dominated.

They took out the gold in the catchweight and 720-kilogram classes, beating St Patrick's, Leicester, and BAC, Brooklands, respectively.

St Patrick's had their revenge in the 680-kilogram class though, beating Bosley into the silver medal position.

In the 640-kilogram division, Felton Eccles, Bristol, team beat the Sheen, Staffordshire team to the gold.

Sandhurst, Berkshire, won the gold medal final against Felton Eccles in the 600-kilogram class while Norton, Stoke-on-Trent, were too good for Sandhurst in the 560-kilogram division.
