EVER fancied life on a warship? Ever wanted to look out from the bridge of a destroyer as she slices her way through the waves?

Well, now's your chance to win a trip on board our very own HMS Southampton, courtesy of the Daily Echo.

Because, next month, the ship is coming home for a four-day visit - her first since January 2000.

Then her captain and crew marched proudly through the streets after being given the freedom of the city by the council - the highest civic honour it can bestow.

Since that proud day she's really been busy.

First, HMS Southampton patrolled the South Atlantic for six months.

After that she spent weeks on end patrolling around the waters near Britain on exercises.

When the Type-42 destroyer leaves Portsmouth naval base on Friday, July 20, our competition winner will be on board.

He or she will have a rare chance to sample life at sea with the navy, as well as lunching with the captain and being on the bridge as she sails into Southampton Docks in the afternoon.

Speaking from sea, HMS Southampton's captain Commander Gary Doyle said: "We're really looking forward to the visit and hope the public will come on board and look around while we're there."
