PLANS to redevelop Hampshire's former cricket ground in the centre of Southampton go before city councillors on Tuesday.

The three-hectare site on Northlands Road is due to be transformed with a luxury development of 47 houses and 100 flats.

Developer Taywood Homes wants to build two and three storey dwellings that will be a mixture of terraced, semi-detached and detached homes.

The houses will be built in the style of Victorian villas - echoing the homes that previously stood in the area.

A stylish gateway entrance will include a plaque feature to remind visitors of the sporting history of the site. At the heart of the development will be a square, complete with a fountain, and there will be several green open spaces for residents to enjoy.

Planners are being recommended to approve the proposals with conditions.

However, not everyone is happy with the plans. Objectors say the three-story element of homes and flats on the southern boundary will block their light and overlook their homes - they also want the scheme to include shops for residents.

They have also raised question marks over the access to the site and whether the cycle way should be open to the public or be there just for residents to use.

Outline planning permission was granted back in 1997, and it has taken until now to clear the site and draw up new plans.

The former home to Southampton Football Club at the Dell is also being redeveloped, with a major flats scheme.
