A WINCHESTER retained firefighter who attacked a man in a "flood rage" incident has resigned from the service.

Jonathan Sankey, 22, attacked David Forster, 57, after he drove through flood-affected Sutton Scotney last December, Basingstoke magistrates heard.

A fire service spokesman said Sankey resigned from the service following his conviction for assault last week. He would have faced a disciplinary hearing and would probably have been sacked.

Mr Forster was attacked after telling Sankey that he was driving too fast through the village and causing water to surge into houses.

Sankey, of Pidgeon House Cottages, Sutton Scotney, admitted grievous bodily harm. Mr Forster suffered a broken jaw, loosened teeth and shock. Sankey was ordered to carry out 250 hours community service and pay £2,000 compensation.
