MATTHEW LE TISSIER blasted his way back to form with a spectacular double for the reserves in a stunning 7-0 win over Spurs and then declared himself ready to face Everton on Saturday.

The crowd hero scored with a trademark free-kick and a first-time long-range shot as supercharged Saints turned on the style at The Dell.

Stuart Ripley and Uwe Rosler also netted twice each with Kevin Davies getting the other to push their own claims.

But it was the impact of Le Tissier which thrilled the fans, and even though he is clearly not fully match-fit the 32-year-old talismanic Channel Islander feels he is ready for a place on the bench if needed.

He said: "Obviously it is up to the manager whether to pick me but I am ready whenever he wants me.

"I am still a little short of full match-fitness and I tired in the last 20 minutes because it was my second game in three days.

"But I would like to think I have an outside chance of being among the substitutes and I hope I have given him something to think about.

"To be fair, the lads have been doing so well that I cannot expect to walk straight back, but if the manager wants me then I am there or thereabouts.

"The main thing for me is to get myself fully fit and regain my sharpness, and I was delighted to be part of a really good team performance last night.

"It has given my spirits a real lift to get a couple of nice goals. It has been a long time since I scored there.

"The first goal gave me a real boost but I was not the only one. You could see that in the performances of Uwe Rosler and Stuart Ripley who both did really well.

"It was a terrific all-round display and just what the club needed after the disappointments against Le Havre last week."

Le Tissier's immediate aim is to reclaim his first-team place, and then prove his form and fitness to earn a new contract with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

But the fans' favourite, who joined Saints as an apprentice in October 1986, is playing down any talk about his future saying: "At the moment I am just concentrating on getting fit.

"I would not imagine that two goals against Tottenham Reserves would sway any decision.

"I have to get back in the side before I can even start thinking of a new contract and I don't even think about it. It is only the media who keep bringing it up."

Manager Glenn Hoddle left just before the end of the thumping win against his old club, but said before the game: "Matt is improving. Whether he is ready for the pace of the Premiership yet is another thing. He now needs to make sure he does not rush things and ends up back in the treatment room."
