THE urban spaceman comes down to Earth next week when Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band frontman Neil Innes (pictured) brings his one-man show to Salisbury Arts Centre.

But "down to Earth" is perhaps the wrong phrase to use in Innes's case. After all, he has made a career out of the insanest of stunts - starting with the anarchic Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, for whom he wrote the classic I'm The Urban Spaceman.

The Bonzos enjoyed a string of hits and also featured in the innovative children's TV series Do Not Adjust Your Set, alongside Pythons-to-be Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and animator Terry Gilliam. Following the implosion of his band in the late Sixties, Innes joined forces with the Monty Python team on a successful run of albums, films (including The Holy Grail and Life of Brian) and concert tours.

Following that came Rutland Weekend Television, The Rutles and the Saturday Night Live-commissioned spoof of the Beatles' story, All You Need Is Cash.

Since then, Innes has written and presented several children's programmes, including The Innes Book of Records, Puddle Lane, The Book Tower and Away with Words.

His one-man show, Innes Own Words, promises to add to his off-the-wall image while showcasing his talents as a storyteller, surrealist and comedian in what is described as a "magical mystery tour through the mind of a national treasure".

This oddball entertainment takes place at Salisbury Arts Centre on March 24, starting at 8pm. Tickets cost from £9. For more information, call the box office on 01722 321744.
