A 41-YEAR-OLD Southampton man has died after being involved in a collision with a BMW car.

Alan Griffiths, of Norton Close, Woolston, was confirmed dead at the scene of the accident which happened at the Radstock Road junction with Manor Road North, in Bitterne, Southampton, at 10.20pm on Saturday.

The driver of the BMW, a 33-year-old local man, was arrested by police at the scene and released on bail after being interviewed.

A local resident, who did not want to give his name, was one of the first people on the scene.

He said: "I was watching the television and I heard a screech like a car trying to stop. It seemed like it went on forever.

"I heard car doors slamming and people shouting and talking. I looked out the window and saw a couple of cars with their hazard lights on and a group of people. There was a man in the road."

The resident, who is a retail manager, said he and his wife - who are both qualified first aiders - rushed out to help.

He said: "I heard someone say 'he's not breathing, there's no pulse'. There was a chap on a mobile phone to the ambulance and they told him to tell me to commence CPR and resuscitation. The police were there in a matter of minutes."

Despite attempts by the resident, police and paramedics, the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

"It's terrible because I kept running scenarios through my head like if I'd got there two minutes earlier. The police said he would have died instantly, but that still doesn't stop you thinking," the resident added.

"The strange thing is I didn't panic, I just knew what I had to do and I got on with it."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with information should call Det Con Simon Brooks at Eastleigh traffic on 0845 045 45 45.
