A comprehensive 39-12 victory for Trojans at Millbrook means they are now certain to finish in the top two in Hampshire League 1.

The only drawback though is that Farnborough's 23-5 success at Guernsey almost certainly means they will finish ahead of Trojans.

Trojans coach Richard Cheal said after Saturday's win: "It's two points and that's what I wanted. We'd an extremely good first quarter and finished the first-half well. We went a bit individual second-half and fair play to Millbrook, they took the game to us."

Millbrook skipper Mike Mulcahy reflected: "I was disappointed with our first-half performance and our tackling in particular. We came back well in the second-half and it gives us something to work on for next week."

Romsey gained a useful victory at Petersfield, an excellent first-half performance enabling then to turn round 17-7 ahead and sound defence holding Petersfield at bay during periods of pressure.

This was especially so late in the game when Petersfield threw everything at Romsey, but the visitors held on for a 17-12 win.

Sandown & Shanklin hammered New Milton 55-3. The visitors' secretary, Nick Hanmer bemoaned: "We had misfortune to begin with. We were lacking our props so had a makeshift front-row. But Sandown were the better side. They were bigger, played the better rugby and deserved to win."

Following his side's 18-0 loss at Ventnor, Hamble's Pete Woolcock observed: "Ventnor were very much up for it. We didn't look like winning it and Ventnor had control of the game."

Warren Fresle of Ventnor added weight to Woolcock's comments by stating: "It was quite an easy win."

Fareham Heathens now require two more points to be certain of the Hampshire 2 title after defeating Eastleigh 23-0. The match was switched to Rugby Camp in Portsmouth and an Eastleigh player and their coach got lost trying to locate the new venue. Even so, the margin of defeat was a little harsh on Eastleigh in a game where the major difference between the sides was speed to the breakdown and keeping the ball alive.

Fordingbridge can now overhaul Nomads for second place after defeating Southampton Institute 23-15 with a severely depleted side. Fordingbridge scored 20 points in the first quarter, then withstood a determined Institute fightback.

Barry Bridgman, the Nomads coach, was scathing after his side's 17-3 loss at Lytchett Minster. "It was pitiful, worse than watching the second team on a poor day. With that sort of display, I'd be embarrassed to take the team into the first division."
