Eastleigh Carnival committee has issued an SOS plea for volunteers to help keep the town's week of fun firmly on the local map.

The major aim is to stage exciting events throughout the week, including one of the largest carnival processions in the South.

Over the years, several thousands of pounds have been raised for local charities and good causes.

Carnival secretary Barry Alford said, with the carnival fast approaching, they urgently needed keen volunteers to help put together the programmne during the week.

It is hoped that budding volunteers will turn out in force at the carnival committee's annual meeting on Monday, March 12, in room two of the Eastleigh Railway Institute on Romsey Road.

Starting at 7.30pm, the meeting will be chaired by Eastleigh mayor Peter Humphreys.

The carnival will run from Saturday, August 11, to Sunday, August 19, with events every day and evening.

The grand procession takes place on the evening of Saturday, August 18, and this year's carnival has no theme.

A carnival court - to reign over the festivities - will be chosen at a selection evening on Friday, April 27, at the Eastleigh Railway Institute.

The selection evening will be sponsored by Angela Holidays, and the prizes for the winners will include trips to France and Germany, plus holiday vouchers.
