THIEVES broke into a Fareham centre for people with mental health problems and stole their training allowances.

Intruders escaped with a safe containing £550 in cash from the Skillploy Workshops in Salterns Lane, run by Winchester Alliance for Mental Health.

General manager Duncan Murray condemned the callous nature of the break-in.

He said: "We have 49 members and are training people with mental health problems to give them skills to get back into the workplace. We do printing work for local magazines and the community and also carry out catering.

"The money can be replaced, but it is the callousness of the theft that has upset everyone. The thieves are striking at people who are in one of the most vulnerable sectors of society. They have also desecrated a safe environment for our trainees."
