Winchester undid their good work of the last two weeks with an apathetic performance at Cambridge that contributed to a 31-15 loss.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Winchester succeeded in giving away numerous penalties that allowed Cambridge to build 24-8 half-time advantage.

A more disciplined second half was a bonus but Winchester were always playing catch-up and failed to take full advantage of the wind.

Winchester secretary Paul Stallard observed: "The players must learn early on what the referee will and will not allow and play to that game plan."

Eastleigh broke their league duck in Hampshire 2 with a 40-22 win over Southampton Institute that could well have been more decisive.

They dominated the first half and were well ahead before conceding a second try on the stroke of half-time.

Eastleigh then worried their supporters in a torrid second half that saw an Eastleigh player dismissed and one from each side sin-binned.

Eastleigh's lack of concentration allowed the Institute back in before the Eastleigh pack again seized control and ensured the welcome victory.

Fordingbridge celebrated the official confirmation that their victory at Isle of Wight earlier in the season was to stand by staggering to a 6-6 draw at Overton in a very dour game. A weakened Fordingbridge side scored a brace of penalties before half-time and Overton replied in kind after the interval.

Isle of Wight's forwards were all over Lytchett Minster in their match in Dorset but slack play gifted Lytchett a couple of tries that enabled them to gain a 17-0 interval advantage. Hard as the Islanders tried, they could not overcome this handicap and eventually lost 20-8.

Fareham Heathens walloped Portcastri-ans 51-5 in the other Hampshire 2 game.

Elsewhere, Alton lost 22-13 at home to Wimbledon in London 2 South, Jersey defeated Old Wimbledonians 36-13 in London 3 SW and United Services went down 24-12 at Chobham in London 4 SW.
