Totton 3 - Horsham 1

Totton survived an edgy finale to march into the last 32 of the FA Carlsberg Vase with a 3-1 win over Ryman Division 2 outfit Horsham at Testwood Park.

Two up through Kevin Reacord and Aaaron Cunningham, they were put under the cosh in the second half and had to hold on after Gary Charman had headed a 74th-minute reply. But Reacord calmed their nerves with a brilliant solo third two minutes into stoppage time after an inspired save by Wayne Shaw had kept out Horsham at the other end.

Totton got off to a dream start with a goal inside two minutes. Steve Jones set Roger Maynard away and he cleverly turned a defender on the edge of the box, chipped the diving keeper and KEVIN REACORD looked to get the final touch over the line.

The Stags looked far sharper than Horsham in the opening stages, but the visitors gradually settled with Steve Flain shooting over and Gary Charman firing wide.

With conditions worsening after a heavy downpour, Horsham's slip-sliding defence was nearly undone again on 24 minutes when Aaron Cunningham fed Reacord who was closed down by the keeper and, amid the scramble, Maynard fired over.

The home side had a lucky escape three minutes later when danger-man Charman sent a free header over from a corner.

With the game opening up, Totton were next to threaten when Cunningham escaped the attention of defender John Kirby to race on to Stuart Ritchie's through-ball, but he fell as he attempted to round keeper Ian Chatfield.

Giant keeper Wayne Shaw protected Totton's lead by touching over a superb curling shot on the turn by Matt Smart which was heading for the top corner on 42 minutes.

Inspired by Shaw's heroics, Ian Robinson's men swiftly doubled their advantage when Maynard's determination beat defender Martin Lempriere on the left and CUNNINGHAM was waiting to bury his cross from close range. In stoppage time Jones tested Chatfield with a well-struck shot from the edge of the area. Half-time:

Horsham emerged a more determined outfit after the break but still it was Totton who made the bulk of he chances.

Jones tested the keeper after Cunningham had headed on Kevin Murphy's free kick and then on 59 minutes Chatfield's weak kicks fell for Jones to put substitute John Rowley through, but the keeper atoned by getting his body behind his shot and sending it over for a corner.

A minute later Chatfield did well again to save Rowley's header from Reacord's corner.

Totton were given a warning sign on 72 minutes when Clinton Moore clipped the top of the bar with a header from a corner.

But the Stags failed to learn their lesson and two minutes later Horsham pulled the tie back to 2-1 when CHARMAN netted a near-post diving header form Lempriere's right-wing cross.
