THE New Forest and Waterside are celebrating a twin-assault on today's fourth-round draw of the FA Carlsberg Vase.

Buoyant Brockenhurst are through to the last 32 for the first time in their history thanks to a thumping 5-2 win over Biggleswade Town in Bedfordshire, while Vase specialists AFC Totton are primed to equal or better last season's heroics after ousting highly-rated Horsham 3-1 at Testwood Park.

It was the second game running the Stags had tamed much-fancied opposition from the Ryman League Division 2, and manager Ian Robinson ref- lected: "We caught Horsham out the same way we caught Molesey by playing three up front and they didn't know how to cope with it.

"It's lifeblood for a club like ours to stay in this competition because it keeps the interest going until after Christmas.

"We've had some tough draws this season but our character has come through when the chips have been down and the players have shown a lot of endurance and endeavour to get this far."

Robinson also paid tribute to Totton's hard-working groundstaff, who worked miracles to get the tie on after yet another week of heavy rain.

It took only two minutes for their pre-match toils to be rewarded when two-goal hero Kevin Reacord got the final touch on some sublime solo skill from Roger Maynard.

The menacing Maynard was also the architect of Totton's second on 43 minutes when his determined cross from the left presented the unmarked Aaron Cunningham with the most relaxed of finishes.

Horsham had arrived with an awesome reputation having held Conference leaders Yeovil 1-1 in the FA Cup, yet it wasn't until the hour-mark that the West Sussex visitors began to click.

They clipped the bar with a Clinton Moore header on 72 minutes and scored soon after when danger man Gary Charman launched himself at a near-post cross with a brave, diving header.

Totton, without a game for three weeks, began to wilt on the energy-sapping surface but the spirit that took them all the way to the last 16 at Bedlington Terriers last season stubbornly refused to fade.

Giant goalkeeper Wayne Shaw had already made one terrific first-half save to deny Horsham skipper Matt Smart, but that paled in comparison to his breathtaking antics in the 90th minute when the big man somehow flung himself sideways to push away a bullet free-kick from the same player.

With stoppage time ticking on, man-of-the-match Reacord calmed Totton's nerves with a decisive third, intercepting a bad clearance and making a darting, solo run to the right of the box before netting from an acute angle.

Brockenhurst made much of the early running at Biggleswade but, after Ben Thomson had struck the inside of the upright, it was the Spartan South Midlands Premier hosts who stole ahead through Warren Grieve - completely against the run of play.

But two goals in six minutes by teenager Richard Cort and Phil Stone put Brock in the ascendancy and the Foresters should have had more before Mark Jones netted a third and Stone a fourth with a rare header to effectively kill off the tie.

A trademark solo goal from Thomson made it 5-1 in the 76th minute before Mark Carter thumped home a late 25-yarder for Biggleswade.

Brock keeper Andy Colverson even pulled off a superb one-handed penalty save in injury time.

"The result was thoroughly deserved," said Brock's assistant boss Chris Collinge.

"We hadn't played for three weeks and I thought that might go against us.

"But maybe Biggleswade scoring early was just what we needed."

The area's other third-round ties involving Cowes Sports and Wimborne have both been rearranged for this Saturday after falling foul of water- logged pitches.
