Gosport is hoping the Ministry of Defence will concentrate engineering training for all the armed services in one of the town's Royal Navy bases.

Under the Ministry of Defence strategic review, campaigners seeking to retain Gosport's military Royal Hospital, Haslar, have suggested extending HMS Sultan's role to accept around 300 Army and RAF engineers.

The campaigners hope the presence of extra forces staff in the town will persuade military senior staff and the Ministry of Defence to keep the hospital open beyond the six years it is due remain open, taking civilian NHS and military patients.

HMS Sultan has spare capacity on top of its 1,200 staff.

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: "The Strategic Defence Review has a significant element looking at how to make the most of training and education.

"The MoD is the nation's largest trainer in the country.

"All the armed forces' training establishments are under review.

"It makes sense to make the most efficient use for similar disciplines across all the services.

"But no decisions have yet been made.

"The idea for HMS Sultan comes from the Save Haslar campaigners, and will be taken into account with the review next year.''

Gosport council leader Peter Edgar said: "This would be great news for Gosport if more were made of Sultan's potential.''
