SO YOU have a room to redecorate, but where exactly do you start? Before deciding to copy a look from a magazine or book, remember that the space has to suit you and your lifestyle.

By picking out a ready-made scheme it is more than likely that you will feel uncomfortable living in it as it is really a space for someone else.

The first step has to be to ask yourself some important questions. For example, what do you intend to use the space for, what colours, textures and materials are you naturally drawn to, and feel comfortable with?

By pin-pointing how the space will be used by you and your family, and identifying colours you like, you are half way to getting a look that is as individual as you are.

Changing trends give us an overwhelming choice of looks, colours and accessories, but it is important not be a slave to fashion, and instead to develop your own sense of style.

Before deciding on the scheme take a good long look at the room and assess what you already have. No room is blank canvas and it is important to note the natural daylight throughout the day and which way the room faces.

Be realistic about other constraints such as the layout of the windows, doors, radiators and power points. They can be changed, but if they are there will be a cost and time implication when planning your design.

Think, too, about the flow through the space, for example how you walk into and through the space. Is it a dead end or a link through to another room?

Be realistic about budget and time scales, too. By planning a project that is too ambitious and time consuming you may find you will run out of steam before it is complete.

And by costing a scheme before you start - by listing all the materials and labour you will need and costing it - you will save yourself from any nasty surprises at the end.

If you need outside help, it is a good idea to try to get at least three different quotes for a job before committing to anything.
