A MAJOR safety scheme to reduce accidents on the A27 has been given the go-ahead.

Hampshire county councillors have approved new traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing in the £434,000 scheme for the road in Titchfield, Fareham, to be started next spring.

The area has seen at least 25 injury accidents in the last three years, and it is hoped new signals at the eastern end of the A27 Titchfield gyratory and the junction with Mill Street, will make the road safer for drivers.

The proposals were welcomed by the county council's roads and development sub-committee chairman, Keith Estlin, who is also Fareham's mayor.

He said: "I an very pleased to see this major scheme coming forward for this busy and hazardous section of the A27 at Fareham.

"I hope it will help to ensure a safer environment, not just for drivers, but for local residents and vulnerable road users, and support our efforts to reduce the number of people injured in road accidents across Hampshire."

A pedestrian crossing will be provided at the Mill Street junction and anti-skid surfacing on all approaches to the lights.

A CCTV camera will also be installed to monitor traffic conditions around the new lights, and the county council's traffic control centre in Winchester will be able to adjust timings to respond to conditions.
