SUBSTITUTE Rob Williams was the spark behind Southampton under-16 boys' team recording a notable victory against Trojans.

The super-sub came on at half-time to score twice, as the city side put behind them a string of defeats and, with an under-strength side, recorded a notable 3-2 victory.

Southampton opened the scoring early in the first half with a thrusting move down the right.

Mike Cotton's cross was skilfully controlled and converted on the reverse by Adam Knight.

Trojans equalised but then Williams came on at half-time and provided a new dimension in midfield. His presence raised Southampton's game and his first goal swung the match.

The Hampshire under-13 squad opened their season with training matches against Dorset and Sussex. They won both games 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.

l Southampton's under-19s second team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a strong Wimborne team, who include two of their ladies' first team players.

Wimborne scored their winner in the second half with Southampton's Amy White missing by inches at the other end.
