Eastleigh match angler Terry Jenkins drew Jekyll and Hyde peg C but still won the first round of the Cormorants Longbridge Winter Series to collect £100 in prize money and go forward to the spring final.
Jenkins fished long pole and maggot to take his haul of fish to 7lb at regular intervals throughout the match to hold off a late challenge from Poingdestres' Dave Pool, who closed rapidly on the leader in the closing stages.
Pool fished peg 13 on the back bank and, after catching a solitary carp on the method feeder, took two bream and two tench plus roach and skimmers to finish with 28lb 8oz taken on the long pole, corn and caster over chopped worm.
Cormorants' Phil Stride finished third with 22lb of mixed carp, tench and silver fish, taken on a combination of feeder and waggler tactics with Terry Bremble fourth with two carp for 20lb.
Others: G Tappenden 19lb 4oz, R Yeo 18lb 12oz. Terry, Jenkins, Steve Rochester and Dave Pool qualify for the final.
