A TEN-year dream to build a unique technology centre in Win-chester for thousands of Hampshire schoolchildren is finally becoming a reality.

Work is now under way on the development of the prestigious science park at Morn Hill and a special visit to the site by Millennium Commissioner Lord Dalkeith marked a milestone in the history of the long-awaited project.

The new Intech centre, backed with a £4.8 million grant from the Millennium Commission, is expected to attract around 150,000 visitors a year when it opens next autumn.

The state-of-the-art building will house over 150 interactive science- and technology-related exhibits linked to all key stages of the national curriculum.

Yesterday, Lord Dalkeith laid a marble foundation plaque on the site of the new complex.

The chairman of the Hampshire Technology Trust, Major Norman Hearson, said: "The trustees and I have waited over a decade for this project to come to fruition. Thankfully, I shall see the dream become a reality by the end of 2001."
