CONTROVERSIAL plans to bring supermarket giant Waitrose to Chandler's Ford have been given the go-ahead.
The decision to let the 24,000 sq ft store be built at Fryern Hill was taken at a heated meeting last night attended by hundreds of residents.
Eastleigh borough councillors voted in Waitrose's favour by 24 votes to 12.
It comes after months of controversy during which many locals fought hard to keep the supermarket out of the area. Among their fears was that it would lead to unacceptable congestion.
Objectors vowed to fight on, despite the decision. Chairman of Fryern Residents' Association Malcolm Mathews told the Echo: "We are very concerned because it's obvious there has been a whip. The Lib Dems have been told how to vote."
Council leader Keith House said: "It is the right decision for Chandler's Ford to make sure it remains a prosperous and successful town centre."
The store plan could still be called in by central government for final clearance but, at this stage, council officers thought it unlikely.
