DESPITE the recent storms, some cracking fish have been taken with Jason McCull leading the way with a 10lb 14oz cod caughfrom the deep water section at Lepe during an evening.

McCull, a 28-year-old fitter from Southampton, was targeting bass when the hefty cod picked up his peeler crab bait presented on a 2/0 hook and fished at close range.

Generally cod have been pretty thin on the ground for shore anglers so hopefully the specimen will be a pointer of things to come as winter starts to bite.

Steve Blehs, a 26-year-old storeman, beached a tasty plaice from Mudeford spit which nudged the scales down 4lb 4.50oz. The oversize redspot snapped up a 1/0 hook baited with a peeler crab/ragworm cocktail.

Another fish of note was a superb specimen pouting weighting 2lb 5oz which was beached at West Bexington by Keith Samson who used squid/crab mounted on a 2/0 hook to fool the specimen.

Between the storms Colin Carsten managed to get afloat for a new Wessex record-breaking tub gurnard which tipped the scales down to 6lb 6oz. He used a homemade lead head baited with squid and fished over a mid channel wreck.

The Rovers' mini midweek pegged Open at Lee-on-Solent was won by Trevor Spencer from Havant with 16 pouting and a tub gurnard together totalling 7lb 8.75oz. Chris Clark from Lymington was the runner-up with 16 pouting weighing 7lb 3.50oz, followed by Tony O'Grady from Fareham with 6lb 10.50oz. Daniel Mogridge was fourth with 6lb 1.50oz with Ryan Whitcombe half an ounce a drift.

Rovers stage another mini midweek Open tonight at Browndown with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm. Tickets, which are strictly pre-book only, have been set at just £5. Last minute details are available from Rovers Tackle on 01202 668244.

A fine spotted ray, which nudged the scales down to 4lb 12.50oz, was the highlight of the Sammy's League held at Gillkricker.

Dave Edwards apprehended the specimen along with a number of pouting together totalling 10lb 1.76oz for a clear victory. Mike Delaney from Fareham was the runner-up with 3lb 4oz followed by Southampton's John Williams 2lb 14oz, John Brown 2lb 9oz, Les Smith 2lb 8oz and Daniel Mogridge 2lb 6oz.

The second round of the Wessex Senior Flounder League was held at Rockley where 71 members lined the beach produced a bumper pay day for John Gordon who picked up over £300 from a golden peg.

Gordon beached three flounders weighing 2lb 14.25oz, which included the nights heaviest fish of 1lb 13oz. Steve Bishop as the runner-up with 2lb 10.75oz followed by Colin Ross and Dave Johnson with 2lb 90z and 1lb 9.25oz respectively.

The finals of the 6-a-side Neptune League Knockout Series will be held between Wessex Angling and Bosombe & Southbourne after the Wessex squad got the better of Bournemouth & District by 28lb to 26lb 8oz.

Boscombe & Southbourne beat Advance Angling by 30lb 6.50oz to 3lb 13oz.

The Dennings Open scheduled for the Weymouth section of Chesil had to be cancelled due to adverse weather condition.

It will now be held on November 26 with fishing from 12 noon to 6pm. There will be a £1200 prize fund including a £400 top prize.
