Hassan Kachloul is ready to re-open contract talks at The Dell after turning down a move to Ipswich.

Saints surprisingly accepted a £1.8 million bid from the newly-promoted side for the Moroccan who has been a firm favourite with the fans since joining on a free transfer 20 months ago.

They reacted with horror at the idea of the creative midfielder moving to their relegation rivals, and so cheaply.

But Kachloul, pictured left, rejected the idea of a move to East Anglia stressing he wants to stay at The Dell and fight for his place. But now that clubs have been alerted to his availability other more tempting offers may follow.

The talented midfielder's contract expires at the end of this season and it seems Saints are prepared to cash in now rather than risk losing him for nothing under the Bosman ruling.

But Kachloul today stressed he has no desire to exercise his freedom of contract and would be happy to commit himself to the club long-term if they reward his substantial contribution to the team.

When he signed, he was unproven in the Premiership and the wages reflected the gamble Saints were taking.

However, Kachloul has been a stunning success dispelling any doubts about his ability to cope with the physical English game or the climate with a series of gritty displays to show he is not afraid to get stuck in.

He has also notched some vital goals and feels he has proved he is worth an improved deal after contract talks broke down a year ago.

He stressed: "I did not ask for a move. I was told the clubs had agreed a fee and it was down to me. I talked to George Burley but I felt it was not right for me.

"I like it at Southampton, I respect the fans and if the club make me a reasonable offer then I would be happy to sign. I am not angling to become a Bosman free agent and I don't want people to think I want to leave."

He has looked one of the sharpest performers in pre-season so far but is unlikely to play in this afternoon's final warm-up match at home to Real Sociedad because of the unsettling effect of the bid.

Paul Jones's experience looks likely to earn him the nod over Neil Moss in goal with new signings Mark Draper and Uwe Rosler making their home bows.
