Tomas Scheckter underlined his massive potential as a racing driver by taking second place in only his second FIA Formula 3000 race.

The series is just one step down the ladder from Formula One yet South African Scheckter from Laverstoke near Salibsury might well have been a winner but for gambling unsuccessfully on wet tyres for the duration of the Hockenheim race.

When the rain began to fall, Scheckter, who had qualified second on the 26-car grid, moved past Aussie Mark Webber and took the lead when his mySAP.com McLaren teammate Tomas Enge stopped to take on slick tyres.

It proved an inspired move by Enge who caught and passed Scheckter on the last lap.
