Pompey boss Tony Pulis will step up his efforts to improve his squad this week after admitting the situation is almost reaching emergency proportions.

Although Pulis was bitterly disappointed after missing out on Bristol Rovers' striker Jason Roberts last week, his priorities also include a central defender with club captain Adrian Whitbread due to undergo knee surgery.

"We need players to strengthen and we need them quickly. We've only got two weeks before the season starts and we have got to be a lot further down the line in a week's time than we are now," added Pulis, who is gearing himself to the fact he might lose his race to bring fresh blood into Fratton Park before the big kick-off.

Speaking after Pompey's 1-1 friendly draw with Coventry City, Pulis said: "Although there were some bright spots, the weaknesses are still there for everyone to see.

"I need players right through the side and we're looking to do that. If we can do that brilliant, if not then we will have to get on with what we have got and do the best we can.

"I have been trying to get quality players but we keep getting knoced back for various reasons."

Whitbread is facing similar surgery to that which he underwent on his knee ligaments last season and with Darren Moore battling against time with a hamstring injury Pulis has one recognised central defender, in Bosman signing from Reading Linvoy Primus, with which to start the season.
