A HAMPSHIRE woman has been charged with causing a horrific head-on crash that killed her ten-year-old daughter.

Jane Boyd is accused of causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drugs or drink

Boyd, 37, of Millbrook Road East, Southampton, is also accused of driving without a licence and having no insurance.

The charges relate to an accident that occurred on the A35 Totton Bypass on October 27 last year.

Boyd and her three children were living at Bevis Close, Blackfield.

They were returning from Southampton when their Ford Escort crossed the central reservation and collided with an 11-ton lorry.

Boyd's ten-year-old daughter Kelly was killed.

Kelly's brother Reece, seven, and sister Vicky, nine, were both badly hurt and placed side by side in the intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Vicky suffered serious head injuries in the accident and is still in hospital.

Boyd was due to appear at New Forest magistrates' court in connection with the three charges she faces following the crash.

But her solicitor, Donald Donaldson, said she was unwell and could not attend.

Boyd was remanded in her absence on unconditional bail to June 22, when she will be committed to the crown court.

After the hearing a police spokesman said: "Boyd is accused of causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs.

"The charge relates to the death of her daughter Kelly."

A court spokesman said anyone convicted of the offence could be jailed for a maximum of ten years and banned from driving for at least 12 months.

Boyd suffered face, head and internal injuries in the crash, which closed the A35 for three hours.

She was discharged from hospital on November 12 and Reece was released on December 10.

A hospital spokesman confirmed that Vicky was still a patient.

But she was unable to describe Vicky's condition because the child has just been moved to a new ward and is still being assessed.
