A DOCKSIDE celebration took place as staff of the city-based stevedore company Southampton Cargo Handling marked the unique operation's tenth anniversary in the port.

Founded as a workers' co-operative following the death of the National Dock Labour Scheme, SCH is now recognised throughout the shipping industry as one of the leading companies in its field.

With a workforce of 206, including a team of apprentices, SCH, the biggest stevedore in the city's port, is now even considering expanding into overseas ports by exporting its experience and expertise.

Over the past decade the company has undertaken a wide-ranging plant and equipment investment programme and has seen its customer base grow to take in most areas of activities in the docks.

Bill Ware, SCH's managing director, said: "Our aim is always to work in partnership with our customers and this has, and always will be, one of the major elements behind the company's growth.''

Tonight the company is holding an anniversary dinner for staff and guests.
