GOSPORT'S mayor claimed a trip to a local pub was all in the line of duty.

Councillor Ken Searle visited The Fighting Cocks and left with £180 for the Shopmobility scheme and the hearing impaired unit at Woodcot Primary School.

Regulars at the pub have been donating to the mayoral charities through their Sunday evening quiz sessions.

Landlord of the Clayhall Road hostelry Dave Perry explained: "Over the last six months we've been raising money by charging a 20p entry fee for the quiz.

"And we also have a bottle at the bar of small change."

They raised £360 in total, £180 for the two charities and the same for the playgroup at the Thorngate Halls.

The mayor said: "It's great when a local pub can put on a good night out for its customers and at the same time raise money for good causes."
