A DEVOTED young dad is preparing to donate a precious gift that will give his daughter a fighting chance of survival.

Simon Greenall says he didn't think twice about giving up one of his kidneys when doctors told him a transplant offered his three-year-old the best hope for the future.

Danni was born with a rare chromosome defect which has left her with only ten per cent use of her kidneys. She also has numerous other problems, including a twisted spine, and cannot yet walk.

The 22-year-old Hampshire dad will undergo surgery for the removal of a kidney at Guys Hospital, London, on Friday.

Surgeons will then switch their attention to Danni and complete the transplant procedure.

"When it happens to your child you just get on with it and don't really think about yourself.

"The doctors have said removing the kidney will be more complicated than the transplant," said Simon, who works as a security officer at Southampton's Leisure World.

"I'll be in hospital for around five to ten days and probably be off work for about two months."

His partner Summa Furmage, 20, of Cedar Close, Bursledon, said: "When I was pregnant they discovered that Danni's kidneys were retaining fluid more than they should have been and when she was born she was a small baby.

"She could go on to next year but would probably need dialysis. Everyone says we have coped very well but it just comes naturally when it's your own child.

"I'm just so proud of Simon and it has brought us much closer as a family."

She added: "All this has changed my views on transplants and I hope more people will think about donating a kidney to save a life in future."
