BIRD-nappers swooped on a Southampton home and snatched a flock of roosting canaries.

The 25 birds, which included a young fledgling with only one eye, were stolen from an aviary in the back garden of Ray King's semi in Sholing Road, Merry Oak.

He is convinced the raid was not the work of opportunists because the thieves apparently came equipped with their own cages.

The break-in happened after the birds had been locked up for the night. But the thieves may have been disturbed as they left behind 11 canaries and two cockatiels.

"They usually fly around freely in the day, but it would have been easy to pick them off their perches when they were roosting," said the 61-year-old bird breeder.

"I went to feed them around 11am, which I do every day, and at first I couldn't make out where they had all gone.

"I think the person who took them must keep birds themselves because they obviously knew what they were looking for. I feel a bit sick about it all."

The canaries, which all carried rings on their legs, are described as mostly yellow, although others were multi-coloured. They were valued at around £350.

Police are hoping an eagle-eyed passer-by could hold the key to the crime.

A spokesman said: "Obviously someone taking 25 canaries must have caused a bit of a disturbance and we would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything to get in touch."
