THOUSANDS of people from far and wide flocked to a sun-drenched Romsey Show last Saturday for a taste of country life at its best.

Those on two legs and four were feeling the heat a bit in the midday sun, but nobody was complaining, least of all the ice cream sellers.

The action came thick and fast in the main ring with the dramatic 12th Light Dragoons Napoleonic Re-enactment Unit providing thrills and spills.

There was great entertainment in the show and jumping ring and as usual lots of top class competition in the show classes.

Winners included Matthew Osmand's Rosmond Mathie Rosa in the Holstein Friesian cow category and Heather Vining with Hiltonbury Yankee Doddle in the Jersey heifer class.

Helper Jan Kilcaldy said: "It was a successful day because the weather was brilliant and everything went according to plan."

With more than 300 trade stands, many visitors spent the day browsing for bargains and enjoying the welcome shade.

Shauna Lowry, who travelled from Bristol for the show, said: "It's a bit hot but at least it's not raining.

"I've been coming to the show for years and this is one of the best I can remember."

Cynthia Dayton, from Aldershot, said her young daughters Zoe and Andrea found the animals fascinating.

"I think it's good for youngsters to come along and see what country shows are all about.

"The Romsey Show is one of the best."

Other children took full advantage of the Romsey Cadets' face painting stand.

Fortune teller Gypsy Lee predicted great things for Saints this season.
