THIS cute canine may have strayed more than 200 miles from her real home. For Yorkshire terrier bitch Rosie was discovered all alone in a street in Fair Oak.

Apart from her nametag the only clue as to her background is a Penzance, Cornwall phone number on the collar. Staff at West End's Blue Cross Shelter are baffled as to how she landed up in Hampshire and that no one has yet come forward to claim her.

She was found on Tuesday, August 10 in the Witt Road area of Fair Oak - the day before the eclipse.

One theory is that she might have taken fright and done a runner as day suddenly turned to night.

She is now being cared for at the Blue Cross shelter in Bubb Lane while the search goes on for her owners.

Blue Cross manager Steve Broomfield says: "We have tried ringing the Penzance number several times but we have not been able to get any reply."

A description of the black and tan terrier, who has white on her chest and white paws, have been circulated through local papers and radio stations in the Penzance area.

Mr Broomfield said: "She is a long way from home. But she might belong to someone who is staying with someone in this area.

"We are surprised that no one has noticed that she is missing."

Described as a "friendly little dog" Rosie is settling in well with other "residents" at the Blue Cross shelter. But staff are keen to reunite Rosie with her family.

The Blue Cross is also giving a temporary home to another animal which has strayed far way from its home roots. The black and white cat was found wandering in Southampton's Inner Avenue area. On its collar was a Bournemouth phone number, which is unobtainable, and a BH14 0AX postcode. Blue Cross staff have named the homeless feline Jimima.

Anyone who can help unite these animals with their owners should ring the Blue Cross on 01703 692894.
