WINCHESTER city councillors are moving with these electronic times.

The Internet revolution has hit the council with 15 of the 55 members now hooked up to e-mail.

In the latest list of addresses of councillors many have given for the first time their electronic addresses as well as the usual telephone and mobile numbers.

It's not just younger councillors who have gone on-line; some veterans have got into the act including Conservative group leader Freddie Allgood and Labour group leader Patrick Davies.

New councillor George Holingbery, 35, is impressed that so many are now part of the information revolution.

He said: " Given the age of councillors it's not too bad. The com-puter industry calls them silver surfers. I think 15 out of 55 just about reflects the population at about 30 per cent on-line."

Mr Holingbery hasn't had any e-mails from constituents since winning the New Alresford ward in May.

But he added: "It's very useful between councillors and the council."

Mr Davies, 55, said: "There are probably a higher number using it in this part of the world. I haven't had any e-mails from constituents but no doubt they will when the addresses become known. It's a useful facility and it's going to be become increasingly important especially for young people but also us golden oldies."
