"THEY couldn't hit an elephant at this dist" So went the last words of a Union general in the American Civil War while scrutinising the enemy.
The war is being brought to life at Fort Brockhurst, Gosport, next month, with a spectacular clash between Confederate and Union troops.
The Southern Skirmish Association is setting up camp in the fort, which is not dissimilar to the design of an American fort of the 1860s.
Fort Brockhurst, an English Heritage building, will be turned into a Civil War camp, with shops, tent lines and drill displays as well as a spectacular battle at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 and 4, to celebrate American Independence Day.
