IT WAS all aboard for two Southampton MPs marking the start of a controversial new commuter line linking the Waterside to the city.

Itchen MP John Denham and Southampton Test MP Dr Alan Whitehead were at the city's central station to greet the arrival of South West Trains new rail-link service.

The bus link, which runs seven days a week, leaves from Hythe's ferry terminal and is timed to make it eas-ier for passengers to connect with fast trains to and from London.

Mr Denham said: "Encouraging greater use of public transport is in everybody's interest - to cut down traffic, pollution, noise and to improve the quality of life in our towns and cities."

Dr Whitehead added: "A good transport system has to be accessible, reliable and provide for easy transfer between modes. This bus link is a good example."

However, the introduction of the new route has caused concern for Hythe ferry operators who fear it may take business away from them.
