AA signs technician Paul Spurdens has helped produce some of the 400 AA signs that are guiding tennis fans to the 1999 Wimbledon Championships.

The signs - all produced by Paul and his colleagues at the AA's work-shop at Lister Point, Basingstoke - took five days to make, and were erected in and around London last week, ready for the start of the tournament yesterday.

Placed end-to-end, the black and yellow AA signs would measure around 400 metres - equivalent to the length of 17 tennis courts!

The AA has helped out at Wimbledon for 80 years. As well as making signs for the event, the organisation provides patrols and staff to manage official car parks and help drivers whose vehicles break down in and around the grounds.
