THE unsung heroes and heroines of Hampshire communities are set to get some well-deserved time off with the Daily Echo.

Today we launch the search for the Young Carers of 1999 - those who selflessly put others before themselves. Whether it's doing the shopping for an elderly relative or round-the-clock care for a disabled brother, sister or parent - we want to hear about them.

There are an estimated 145,000 carers in Hampshire - providing a vital service in sometimes stressful situations, often with lit-tle or no respite.

The Daily Echo has teamed up with city solicitors Paris, Smith and Randall, and The Mayflower theatre to offer young carers the chance to see the smash-hit musical Grease in Southampton.

More than 20 families from across south Hampshire will enjoy this special trip, which also includes the opportunity to meet the show's cast, which stars Luke Goss, former frontman of 80s pop-sters Bros.

Up to four tickets are available for each carer and their family to enjoy the ever-popular musical.

The scheme has been developed after Paris won an ABSA (Association for Business Sponsorship of the Arts) award - a government-sponsored initiative. And as well as involving 50 tickets for both the June 26 and July 3 performances of Grease, the award includes a three-year sponsorship deal Paris has signed with Mayflower.

Mayflower director Dennis Hall said: "We are pleased that ABSA have recognised the generosity of Paris, Smith and Randall. The extra funds will provide a great boost to our development of this historic theatre.''

Malcolm Le Bas, senior partner at Paris, said the firm wanted to give young people the chance of a theatre trip which they might not other-wise get.

Neil Davies, family law partner, added: "These young people truly deserve some recognition for the selfless work they do on a regular basis.''

Amanda Kelly, of Southampton Young Carers Project, said: "I am pleased to see that young carers are receiving some recognition for the caring that they do in their fam-ilies. "Offering theatre tickets will allow young car-ers some much-needed time-off to have some fun."

Is there a dedi-cated young carer in your fami-ly, or do you know a youngster who regularly gives up their time to help a relative or family member
