METHANE gas from household rubbish at a landfill site at Fair Oak could soon be helping to power homes and industry.

Waste management company SITA is asking Hampshire County Council for permission to build a renewable power generation plant and associated sub-station at the Fair Oak Landfill Site off Mortimer Lane at East Horton Farm. County councillors will vote on the scheme when they meet today.

The 13.5-hectare site was a former sand extraction site but is now used for dumping a range of domestic, industrial and commercial wastes. Waste tipping is permitted until the end of December 2006.

Now the plan is to develop a power generation plant using landfill gases generated by the site, with the plant expected to generate about 2.25 megawatts of electricity for about 15 years.

Councillors will be told that only one resident has objected to the scheme and neither the nearby East Horton Golf Centre nor Fair Oak and Horton Heath Parish Council has objected.
